The Phoenix Kitchen – Ways that we can help the environment

The Phoenix Kitchen – Ways that we can help the environment

Situated within Claydon Estate’s 18th century courtyard is our excellent eatery, the Phoenix Kitchen. Our ethos is to serve local, fresh and seasonal food throughout the year.

Traditionally, our customers have been visitors to the National Trust Claydon House, but increasingly we are welcoming more from our local communities. This further strengthens our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, supporting the local economy, and providing sustainable tourism.

Four ways the Phoenix Kitchen is reducing its carbon footprint:

  • Local suppliers – We are passionate about supporting local, independent suppliers, and where possible we source food from within 30-miles of the estate. We still grow a wonderful variety of fruit on the estate, and use these in our cakes, preserves and juices.
  • Reducing plastics – We have significantly reduced our use of plastics and are moving away from single use plastics both in the restaurant and kitchen areas.
  • Eco-friendly takeaway packaging – In 2020, when we switched to takeaway service, we chose a range of eco-friendly catering disposables. The range is compostable, biodegradable, recyclable and made from carbon-saving, plant-based materials and sustainable-sourced paper.
  • Helping our customers to help us – When switching to takeaway service, we provided more bins to help customers sort their waste for recycling. We limited our menu and offered a pre-order service to reduce food waste.
