Burns Night at the Phoenix Kitchen

Burns Night at the Phoenix Kitchen

Join us to celebrate Scotland’s most famous Bard

On January 23rd, 2025, we invite you to join us at the Phoenix Kitchen for our Burns Night Supper Club.

Burns Night falls on the 25th January and marks a special day in the Scottish calendar as it’s a day to celebrate the life and works of the poet Robert Burns.

We take a look at the history of the Burns Night tradition and explore the Scottish delights that feature in our special Burns night menu.

The Bard’s Legacy

Robert Burns, often affectionately known as Rabbie Burns, was a Scottish poet, lyricist, and songwriter whose works continue to captivate audiences worldwide. Born in 1759, Burns’ poetry celebrated the beauty of the Scottish landscape, the joys of love, and the struggles of the working class. His poems, written in both Scottish and English, often explored themes of social justice, patriotism, and the human condition.

He wrote hundreds of poems and songs – Did you know he wrote “Auld Lang Syne”?

Burns Night can trace its origin back to 1801 when nine of his closest friends decided to get together to mark the fifth anniversary of his death. The evening included a meal of haggis, performances of Burns’ work, and a speech in honour of the great bard. This celebratory day has since become a tradition and is celebrated each year on Robert Burns’ birthday, 25th January.

Burns Night at the Phoenix Kitchen

Our Burns Night supper club offers a delicious three-course menu as well as live music from bag piper, Richard Jasper.

As you arrive, you’ll be warmly greeted and served a selection of canapés while enjoying the sounds of live bagpipes in our historic courtyard.

Choose from a selection of three starters followed by the main centrepiece which is, of course, the iconic haggis, a savoury pudding made with sheep’s offal, oats, suet and spices.

Alongside the haggis, you can enjoy neeps and crushed potatoes, with sautéed leeks and buttered carrots.

If haggis isn’t to your taste, don’t worry! There are alternative choices available, including half a roast pheasant served with a wild mushroom and bacon ragout.

Our menu also features a vegetarian haggis, which is a blend of pulses, seeds and vegetables mixed with oats and spices.

Finish the meal by choosing one of three desserts followed by tea or coffee served with classic Scottish tablet.

When the haggis is ready to be served, our piper will lead our chef into the dining area with a traditional Scottish tune as the haggis is presented on a platter. You can then enjoy a recital of Burns’ poignant poem, “Address to a Haggis”, which pays homage to the humble haggis, elevating it to a symbol of Scottish culture and identity.

Whether you’ve attended a Burns Night before or are new to this tradition, we invite you to join us for a delightful evening.
