Elizabeth Calvert née Hulse 1732-1807
Elizabeth Hulse was born on 4th February 1732, the daughter of Dr Edward Hulse (later Sir Edward Hulse) and his wife Elizabeth Levett. Dr Edward Hulse was Physician in Ordinary to Queen Anne and King George I and First Physician to King George II. He was created 1st Baronet Hulse in 1739.
Elizabeth married John Calvert of Albury Hall (1726-1804), on 8th September 1757. John was a partner in the family brewing business and served as an MP between 1754-1802, including MP for Wendover, Buckinghamshire, 1754-1761. His mother Mary was the sister of Richard Calvert whose wife Mary (widow of John Verney) was the mother of Mary Verney, Lady Fermanagh, the last blood relative of the Standard Bearer to own the Claydon Estate.
John Calvert’s elder brother, Peter Calvert, was the father of General Sir Harry Calvert, whose son Sir Harry inherited the Claydon Estate in 1827. Sir Harry changed his surname by Royal Licence to Verney to inherit the Verney family estates from his cousin Mary Verney.
The portrait, which is painted in pastels, is dated 1755 (prior to Elizabeth’s marriage to John Calvert) and signed by Francis Cotes. It shows Elizabeth wearing a white dress with a black lace shawl and a blue and white hat.
