A beautiful and impressive 100 inch (250cm) long hand knotted 1-strand necklace of graduated 8mm to 12mm white pearls that can be worn doubled or tripled up around the neck.
Susan Temple, Lady Denton 1577-1640
Susan Temple was born around 1577, the daughter of John Temple of Burton Dassett and Stowe and his wife Susan Spencer. She was the sister of Sir Thomas Temple, 1st Baronet of Stowe, and married Sir Thomas Denton of Hillesden, by whom she had 12 children. Sir Thomas Denton was an MP and was High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire in 1600-1601.
Their children included Sir Alexander Denton and William Denton. Sir Alexander died in the Tower of London on 1st Jan 1645 having been captured by the Parliamentarians in the attack on Hillesden House during the English Civil War in 1644. Dr William Denton was the physician to Charles I and Charles II. Their eldest child, Margaret Denton (1594-1641) married Sir Edmund Verney (the Standard Bearer) at Hillesden in 1612.
She died in September 1640 and was buried at Hillesden.
The portrait was painted in 1627 by a member of the British School and shows Susan, Lady Denton in her 50th year . She is dressed in black and adorned with pearls.
