Lady Lucy Caroline Calvert née Herbert 1819-1884

Lady Lucy Caroline Herbert was the eldest daughter of Edward Herbert,  2nd Earl of Powis of Powis Castle, Welshpool, and his wife, Lucy, daughter of the Duke of Montrose.

She was born on 10th Dec 1819 and married Frederick Calvert QC in Welshpool on 14th September 1865. The ceremony was conducted by her uncle, the Ven Archdeacon Clive and she was given away by her brother the 3rd Earl of Powis, her father having died in 1848 as a result of a shooting accident.

Frederick Calvert was born in Kensington on 9th Jun 1806, the younger son of General Sir Harry Calvert.  Frederick’s elder brother, Sir Harry Verney, had inherited the Claydon Estate in 1827.  Sir Harry Verney had changed his surname by Royal Licence to Verney to inherit the Verney family estates from his cousin Mary Verney, 1st Baroness Fermanagh.

A collection of Frederick’s letters survives in the Archive at Claydon as do a diary and various letters and watercolours of Claydon by Lucy.

Lady Lucy Calvert died in 1884 and Frederick in 1891 – they are both buried at Middle Claydon.

The portrait, by George Richmond RA, shows Lady Lucy wearing a pale blue dress trimmed in red.  It is painted in pastels and watercolours and was commissioned at a cost of £305.  It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872.
