Reducing our carbon footprint

Reducing our carbon footprint

We’re always looking at ways on the farm where we can reduce our carbon footprint, that’s why we’re conducting a trial of a new seaweed fertiliser.

Here on Claydon Estate our in-hand farm specialises in growing combinable crops such as wheat, oats, oilseed rape, field beans and linseed.

One of the highest points of carbon emission on any arable farm is the use of artificial fertilisers.  A significant amount of greenhouse gasses are produced in the manufacture and transportation of these fertilisers, and the carbon footprint can be as much as 80%.

Artificial fertilisers became popular following the 2nd world war when UK farmers were challenged to feed the nation. They ensured a healthy growth of crops and maximised crop yields. Their effect on crop production and population growth was immediate.

They continue to be an important part of arable farming, however, over the years, the quantity of fertiliser required to maintain yields has grown. This has reduced the levels of good bacteria within the soil making the grower even more reliant on chemical additives.

We’re always looking at ways in which we can ensure long term sustainability of our farming practices, as well as ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint, this is why we’re excited to be conducting a trial of a new natural seaweed fertiliser on plots covering 20 acres.

The fertiliser is made from both seaweed and bacteria which will not only reduce our carbon footprint but will also help replenish the soil with healthy nutrients.

The high fibre content of the seaweed acts as a soil conditioner and works in harmony with the plant-soil ecosystem, the high levels of nutrients within the seaweed, (including nitrogen, potassium, and magnesium, as well as over 60 other minor nutrients) lead to both stronger and more rapid plant growth and subsequently larger crop yields and greater disease resistance. The bacteria element helps transport these nutrients to the plant promoting healthy growth.

We’re excited by the trials and look forward to seeing the results over the coming months.
